Rates and Taxes Office tightens the issue of New License and Public Vehicle Driver’s Permit

A Learner Driver’s License is valid for 1 year and will only be issued:

  • on the payment of the prescribed fees;
  • suitable medical certificate being produced;
  • evidence of the age of the applicant being produced (such as a birth certificate), and will be
  • limited to the types of the vehicle the holder may drive.

A holder of a leaner driver’s license is not allowed to carry any passengers other than the person instructing him or her and are required to display at the front and rear of the vehicle a plate containing the letter “L” (not less than 12 centimeters high) in red on a white background.

It is an offence if a learner driver fails to comply with the above provisions and on conviction will be liable to heavy fines.

Also due to the recent road accidents involving public transport the Office will comprehensively monitor and screen all applications for a Public Vehicle Driver’s Permit and would like to remind drivers that they are only permitted to apply if they have in their possession a valid current driving license for a period of not less than one year.

Furthermore the Rates and Taxes Office is currently working closely with other Government Agencies to amend the Road Traffic legislation to strengthen the issue of Public Vehicle Driver’s Permits.

Rates and Taxes Office warns that anyone knowingly makes a false declaration in any application for a certificate, license or permit will be committing an offence under the provisions of the Road Traffic (Control) Act.
